The Education of a CTO
The Education of a CTO is a book project that Dan Woods has been working on for several years. The central thesis of the book is that technologists have personality characteristics and a cognitive style the book refers to as the Raw Technology Persona.
In the early stages of the career, the Raw Technology Persona serves technologists well and the challenges of a technology career provide much enjoyment. But when technologists rises their careers, the Raw Technology Persona causes a series of problems. In order to succeed at the higher levels of a technology career, team leader, manager, VP of Engineering, and CTO, technologists must develop habits that overcome the impulses and tendecies of the Raw Technology Persona.
Once the book covers the transition, the role of the CTO in the modern world of IT and Silicon Valley is examined. Profiles of successful CTOs are presented along with analysis of the role that technologists can play in the business world and in society at large.
